Cloud, Data Center or Office: Where should we store our critical data? (Track Focus: Converging/Emerging Technologies)

Session 3-B, 2:00-2:45 PM

  • Michael Morey - President & CEO, Bluebird Network LLC
Mr. Morey has been serving as President and CEO of Bluebird Network since 2012. With more than 40 years of telecommunications experience, Morey has served as President & CEO of Voxitas, Senior Vice President at NuVox, Regional Vice President of Electric Lightwave, Inc. and held various management positions within his 13 years at AT&T. During his tenure at Bluebird Network, the company has more than tripled in size and was named as one of the fastest growing companies in Missouri in 2015. Morey’s experience and strong management skills proved successful when Bluebird Network received INC 5000 in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017 as one of the fastest growing private companies nationally. Voxitas also received INC 5000 recognition in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Morey earned a BS and MBA while attending the University of Southern California.
Summary
There are three main choices of where to store your data: On-premises (in your office), in a data center or in the cloud. Each of these have pros and cons and each of these solutions can be tailored to fit a business’s needs. The conversation gets interesting when you start challenging “the way it’s always been done” and start looking at how certain shifts in decision making can lead to more security, more flexibility, more cost savings, etc. Businesses need to understand what they use their data for, how important it is to their operation right now, in an hour, tomorrow or in a year. Do they have back-ups? Are those back-ups protected somewhere safe? Are your servers running on uninterrupted power? What happens if the lights go out? Do you lose a dollar? It's not hard to stoke fear in the business community when you see headlines about the millions of dollars lost when data stops flowing. That' not the goal here. The goal is to educate attendees on this conversation, top-down and in-depth; so they can feel confident in answering questions and understanding where their risks are now and what options they have to mitigate those risks.

The Value of In Person Software Development Teams (Track Focus: Development/DevOps)

Session 3-C, 2:00-2:45 PM

Location
Anne Mclester - Verkada Room
Speakers
  • Ben Pomerenke - Software Engineer, WarehouseQuote Technologies
I have worked in the Software Industry for 15 years. I am a Software Engineer by trade, but my real passion is growing and sustaining high performing teams. For 12 years I have grown into that with a project based consulting company based in St. Louis, but with a local presence. Recently, I was connected to an opportunity to start a SaaS company that services the Warehousing and Logistics industry and I am still figuring out what that means. I am a passionate supporter of in person work, but have experience discovering the nuances of virtual work as well.
Summary
Many people in the industry have touted virtual work arrangements as beneficial to their work life balance and productivity. In the short run, I totally agree. Suddenly having the ability to watch a sick kid during the work day is a powerful reality. Being able to disconnect from the team to give 100% focus on a particular problem and solve it is great as well. Having access to work and family when it makes sense for you, who wouldn't want that. But I would argue these benefits pale in comparison to the long term benefits of working closely with team members, learning and growing together, and refining team processes to adapt to needs of the team and project efficiently. Software development is a dynamic process that is tied very closely to the people doing it. The problem is not black and white, but so many are trying to make it so by shuttering offices or forcing people back to the office on strict schedules. There’s a better way and the following is my attempt to describe that in hopes you will consider taking the leap back to wanting to work in person again for building software. I think it will benefit you and the industry in ways that are hard to quantify, but that will make a meaningful impact to all involved.
